Memory, for Halbwachs, bound groups of people together, recharging their commonality by reference to the physical spaces and previous instances, often a founding moment, of that collective identity. But clearly the collective nature of Halbwachs’s memory made it amenable to the collective spatiality that is the city. These specific resonances with the city are clear in the following passage: When a group is introduced into a part of space, it transforms it to its image, but at the same time, it yields and adapts itself to certain material things which resist it. It encloses itself in the framework that it has constructed. The image of the exterior environment and the stable relationships that it maintains with it pass into the realm of the idea that it has of itself. (…) A city remembers through its buildings, Rossi argues, so the preservation of old buildings is analogous with the preservation of memories in the human mind.
